Joliette, 18 October, 1999 LA BOTTINE SOURIANTE: MORE LIVELY THAN EVER There is no respite for the band members of La Bottine Souriante. This summer the band gave 17 shows in five European countries (France, Italy, Spain, England, Scotland and Ireland). They stole the show at the Rencontres internationales des Luthiers et Maîtres Sonneurs in Saint Chartier, France; triumphed at the prestigious WOMAD in England and also were broadcast over the BBC airwaves; conquered the Catalonians at the Festival internacional de Musica Popular Tradicional in Barcelona, Spain; charmed the Italians at the 4th Festival Interceltico de Trezzo; and delighted the English at the Sidmouth International Festival of Folk Arts. The fall season is just as turbulent. Invested with that sort of energy that is rarely seen and which evokes an enthusiasm that stirs the heart to celebrate, La Bottine Souriante gave a taste of what it is capable in Sardinia (Italy) in the framework of the International EMI/Virgin Music Congress. Toronto will receive the band in mid October, and then the group will cross the borders to get the Americans of Wisconsin and Minnesota dancing. Next, the band will be off to Belgium, the central hub of the European market, where they'll try to liven up the dullness of autumn. La Bottine Souriante is the most illustrious ensemble of Quebec's traditional music. The band has been nominated for 4 Felixes at the 1999 ADISQ Gala in the following categories:
In addition, the band is launching its latest video clip, "Le Medley des Éboulements," a three part allegory of the 1920s to our day. This video depicts a fleeting time that was the past, and impossible relationships. In storybook fashion, director Francis Leclerc, through dance and rhythm, reveals a Bottine Souriante outside of an era. One may ask if this clip might be a transposition of La Bottine Souriante's career which, for 23 years now, has worked unremittingly to reach the echelons of international recognition which today is in full swing? Moreover, for the first time in many years, La Bottine makes an escapade from the traditional 31st of December Party that since 1989 has been held in Montreal. The group has, likewise, received a special invitation to play at a similar, renown party in Edinburgh, Scotland. In fact, Edinburgh is to the party what Mecca is to the Moslems! It is the European counterpart to the famous New Year's Eve party in New York. At least once in a lifetime one must participate in this Super Party which lasts seven days and brings together 180,000 people on the 31st of December. This year the promoters of the Edinburgh's Hogmanay Millennium are going all out by promising that this will be the biggest show on earth celebrating the entry into the year 2,000--it'll be even bigger than that of New York! It was impossible for La Bottine to refuse such an opportunity. But let the fans find consolation in the fact that La Bottine will resume its traditional Quebec tour (more than 15 shows) starting November 26th to December 27th --and it promises to deliver! The band will be in Montreal, Quebec (in the flesh!), on the 30th and 31st December, 2,000. PRESS RELEASE Joliette - Monday, December 21, 1998 The company Mille-Pattes, a Québec Record Production Company specializing in traditional music is happy to enrich its collection of traditional music TRADITION*QUÉBEC with two new titles of high quality and exceptional richness, these being : " Au tour du flageolet " from Daniel Roy a versatile multi-instrumentalist and dominant figure in Québec's traditional music scene and " La St-Berdondaine " from the group Entourloupe, a traditional music ensemble donating its time to the promoting, distributing and popularizing of certain aspects of Québec's traditional arts. In further developing this collection, Mille-Pattes wishes to represent Québec's cultural heritage in the current global wave of traditional music that has become more and more sought after as much by the vast public as by avid collectors. " Au tour du Flageolet " is a composition of a new and original repertoire combining a slow melody to genuine 'brandy', nouveau jig, Irish, and walze in a traditional Acadian song. With this album Daniel Roy has us discover a small pleasant instrument called the flageolet wich reminds us of the melodies of Ireland, home of the tin whistle. This flute with six holes lends itself magnificently well to the interpretation of those old family tunes. It evokes a long lost tune that has been rediscovered and retrieved in our memory its rythmes tinged with an air of various colours and shades. On the one hand, " Au tour du flageolet " is a traditional piece transcending time, as well as, renewing and reinventing the traditional music style. The second title " La St-Berdondaine " is an album that was carefully prepared by the group Entourloupe. A gem to listen to and enjoy for quite a long time. In it, genuine jig and square-dance music take flight with the violin, the The repertoire of music and songs comes from among others Marc Brien, Ben Benoit and Marie-Rose Cloutier, adding an original composition. The pieces are performed brilliantly by the following musicians who possess a vast experience in traditional music : Daniel Roy, Paul Marchand, Éric Favreau and Stéphane Landry and the vocals are sung by these pillars of traditional music : Michel Faubert and André Marchand. This album is an invitation to penetrate the very heart of traditional music and its songs which reflect a Québec music scene filled with history, emotion and merryment. Joliette, Thursday, October 1th 1998 - The Bottine Souriante isn't standing idly by, they're bursting onto the world scene. It's with their fiery musical spirit, bold performance and a touch of lunacy that the Bottine Souriante embarks on a new voyage abroad. This fall, the nine lively fellows prepare to reconquer the European public. From October 4th to the 2th of November, the group will gear its way to Europe. A facinating itinerary takes them to Spain, Scotland, Belgium, Sweden with stop-overs in cities such as Barcelona, Madrid, Göteborg, Aberdeen , Brussels and many other European cities. A very intense timetable indeed! With many years of passionate music-making behind them, the Bottine Souriante wants the tradition to continue. Wanting to have their music known throughout the world, the Bottine Souriante has become an evergrowing legend in contemporary roots music, crossing both the Quebec and Canadian borders. 1997 and 1998 have been very intensive and busy years, taking the group to more than 50 performances given outside Quebec, with their Canadian, American and European tours. Let's take, for example, the Bottine Souriante's participation in the album " Fire in the Kitchen " by THE CHIEFTAINS, as well as, an original collaboration on the album " Bilbao 00:00H " with KEPA JUNKERA and last but not least, the preparation of their tenth album expected out in the near future, add to this a whole new performance and much much more... Last spring, a Spanish record company released, under the label RESISTENCIA, the last two albums of the Bottine Souriante. LA MISTRINE wich turned Gold in 1994 and Platinum in 1997; on tour it has been the album used in two decades of touring and turned Gold as a promo-album in 1997. Warmly welcomed by the Spanish public, the Bottine Souriante wants to highlight the welcome they received. The European tour will begin with a series of promotional performances in Spain where the group is being received by the media in Madrid. In addition, during its tour in Valencia and La Coruña, the Bottine Souriante has invited the famous Basque virtuoso accordionist KEPA JUNKERA to participate in their performance. Whether they perform in Europe, in the United States, in Canada... or in Quebec, the famous group servers up cocktail of folk-fusion wich tatalizes every musical palette. Wherever they may play, the Bottine Souriante mesmerizes their audience, amazing and surprising all who hear and see them by the shear brilliance of their performance and the richness of their cleverly updated traditional repertoire. When the Bottine Souriante tours... It's a musically delicious extravaganza that only the group's lively members can dish out. GO TO THE TOP PRESS RELEASE Joliette, May 11 1998 LES VACANCES DE MONSIEUR LAMBERT On April 20th, after twenty years as singer/accordionist with La Bottine Souriante, Yves Lambert released a first solo album entitled "Les Vacances de Monsieur Lambert" (Mr. Lambert's Vacation). A man passionate about music and poetry and supremely qualified as both singer and instrumentalist, Yves Lambert embarks with accomplice Sylvie Genest on what can only be called an adventuresome journey. The album is an exotically-spiced but slowly marinated idea, the result of four years of hard work and rare personal moments, tumbled at last into a delicious recipe. Les Vacances de Monsieur Lambert is not, as the title may suggest, some long-forgotten, slightly maughty silent filmit is turn-of-the-century ambiance with contemporary street color; vivid words, often more poetic than lyric; and playful rhythms with that sensitive, "Lambertian" touch. What we hear is Lambert's confession of his love affair with music and words, an escapade of heart and soul that implicates Rimbaud, Beaudelaire, Léo Ferré, Gaston Miron, Chief Seattle, Raymond Lévesque and other passionate writers, musicians and thinkers. We hear music that takes risks, a loving hybrid inspired by a steamer trunkful of sources: French cabaret and pop, traditional Québécois and Celtic airs, folk/ethnic, poetry and original compositions. Traveling companion/musicologist Sylvie Genest was responsible for travel arrangements and navigation. Also on board for this high-spirited adventure were: Francine Martel (percussion), Patricia Deslauriers (acoustic and electric bass), Pierre Niquette (acoustic and electric guitars, banjo), Yvon Plouffe (drums), and sound engineer Claude Champagne. Just before setting sail, Richard Haworth (acoustic, electric and Hawaiian guitars, tiplé) managed to skip on deck before the final whistle blew. The trip brought joyous encounters with a slew of interesting people: the Quatuor Molinari, Jacques Beaudoin (accoustic bass), Geneviève Grenier (Martenot waves), Daniel Roy (flute, dulcimer), Élise Guay (bagpipes), Francine Christie and Roxanne Potvin (vocals). The intriguing album packaging was conceived of by Françoise Boudrias in collaboration with photographer Christian Rouleau and graphic designer Sylvain Beauséjour. With an intoxicating atmosphere of profound warmth, Les Vacances de Monsieur Lambert turns us into time travelers, vagabonds wandering wonderously throught a personal landscape that takes us backwards in time. Each musical moment is a new encounter, collected and sent to us like a souvenir postcard from a mysterious land of borderless frontiers. Source : Les Productions Mille-Pattes Joliette, February 7th, 2000… LA BOTTINE SOURIANTE WALKS AWAY WITH THE BBC FOLK AWARDS La Bottine triumphantly capped the 1999 season at Edinburgh's Hogmany Millennium. More than 250,000 people watched this French-Canadian band on the Waverley stage and on giant screens at the four corners of the city of Edinburgh in Scotland. The group likewise began the New Year with great success when, for the first time in its history, the BBC offered Folk Awards at the Waldorf Hotel, London, on the 7th of February, to signal the contributions made by outstanding folk music artists. An especial homage was paid to singer Joan Baez, a long standing folk music pioneer. About a dozen prizes were awarded. La Bottine walked away with the prize for the 1999 Best Live Group Performance in the United Kingdom. The musicians felt honored by this recognition that crowns many long years of hard work on English soil. A European tour began from mid to end of January took the band from London to Cannes. Meanwhile, La Bottine conquered new audiences in England. One of England's most prestigious concert halls, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, was sold out. The London audience, used to the rigidity of classical and jazz music concerts in this Hall, were amply rewarded with La Bottine's show and soon joined in the foot-stomping and hand-clapping. The reels churned out by La Bottine proved irresistible as many in the audience stood up to dance in the aisles! "Le Bottine makes smoke in Cannes," said Michel Dolbec writing for the Canadian Press. While on the evening of January 25th MIDEM presented extracts from the English version of Notre-Dame de Paris, and the popular Youssou N'Dour, from Africa, filled his audiences' ears, the Martinez Ballroom was in full swing with the Celtic World Folk Event. Wig a Wag, a group from Breton, filled the air with their unique sounds, soon to be followed by the Galician, Carlos Nunez, whose international carrier is well on its way. But the party didn't start until a little later when, at the stroke of midnight, La Bottine stoutly walked out on stage and confronted an audience which is well known to be selective in its tastes. Everyone succumbed to the audacious big-band accents which characterize this musical group from Quebec. - 30 - Source : Les Productions Mille-Pattes Promotions : Clôde de Guise Telephone : (450) 752-2598 e-mail : mp@millepattes.com
La Bottine will be featured on Télé-Québec, Sunday, March 20th, at 8 P.M., with the likable Dan Bigras who put the band on his "Favorite" List. The band will open the show named, Le Plaisir Croît avec Lusage. No doubt that La Bottine will set the tone for the show with foot stomping fun for all. Put this on your agenda as your TV choice of the week. And Away We Go Again! In a few days La Bottine begins its spring tour by flying to France to be part of the 4th International French Language edition of the Météores Festival in Douai. The tour culminates in Spain (Vigo, Leon, Madrid) where the group is eagerly expected. Close links have already been established with the Spanish public and, in addition, our "national" foot stomper, Michel Bordeleau, will be recording on two albums by the Basque artists, Oskorri et Txalapartaris. These albums are produced by the longstanding friend of La Bottine, Kepa Junkera, a virtuoso accordionist. This is about, more or less, honest manipulations, but here, the goal is to have fun. The group Les Batinses new album Tripotages , fools around with music. Folklore makes room for funklore ! The group, consisting of 5 men and one woman, proposes music that is out of this world. From far North to the Mediterranean, their music navigates between the tango, the polka, the jazz and good-old reels from Quebec. These cossacks of the quebec scene put their fans thru live and unforgettable Balkanic eruptions. They are spontaneous, energetic, unpredictable and comedy is never far behind. These ethnologist musicians thoroughly explore the Laval University of Quebec's archives to find hidden treasures of our heritage. In a colored language, they find tales, with a surrealist flavor about human faults. These researchers also enjoy fooling around with uncanny instruments like bouzouki, uillean pipe, the bombarde bretonne and the didgeridoo. Les Batinses surf through many frontiers and eras to create a world class music that is made in Québec.
" Very good trad, it is definitly one of the best Trad groups " Yves Bernard, Ici, Montreal
The album will be available April 25th 2000. Released in Quebec: April 25th at 5:00pm, at The Grand Théâtre. Concert April 28th : L'Anglicane (Lévis ) Released in Montreal : May 2nd at 5:00pm followed by a concert at 8:00pm, at Kola Note (old Club Soda) 5240, avenue du Parc. December 30 and 31 at the Centre Pierre-Charbonneau: La Bottine Souriante Keeps Up The Tradition Joliette, November 7, 2000 -- After two years of wearing out boots while travelling the world, La Bottine Souriante will be back in Montreal and in fine shape to present the traditional year-end show. The 5,000 people who will be in the Centre Pierre-Charbonneau for this party will be happy they didn't follow the birds south for the holidays, because the evenings of December 30 and 31 are sure to be very hot! In fact, on top of warming themselves up with the frenzied beat that at times recalls the Cajun and Latin American rhythms, which characterise La Bottine, the audience can get their hips swaying to the beat of merengue, bachata and salsa during the opening act with Joaquin Diaz, from the Dominican Republic, and his musicians. In addition, Danielle Blaney, Olivier Loubry, Luis Lopez and, of course, the high energy Sandy Silva will play in counterpoint to the traditional jigs and stomp the beat with percussive dance seasoned with the rhythms of flamenco, tap-dancing and zapateo. This explosion of visual and sound effects reflects the deconstruction of Québécois traditions at the start of this 21st century. The nine musicians in La Bottine Souriante will take advantage of the occasion to present new compositions that are a taste of what's to come on their next album, to be released in the fall of 2001. Also following the tradition, La Bottine Souriante will precede this show with a tour of Quebec: November 23 and 24 inSainte-Geneviève, November 5 in Saint-Antoine-de-Tilly, December 1in Victoriaville, December 2 in Joliette, December 8 in Saint-Georges-de-Beauce, December 13 in Saint-Jérôme, December 14 in Saint-Hyacinthe, December 16 in Shawinigan, December 19 and 20 in Terrebonne, December 21 in Gatineau, December 22 in Drummondville, December 23 in Saint-Jean-sur-le-Richelieu, December 27 in Sainte-Foy, December 28 in Sainte-Thérèse and December 29 in Sherbrooke. Nearly two years stomping up a storm on the stages of Europe and the U.S. Since their last year-end show presented in Montreal at the Centre Pierre-Charbonneau, in December 1998, La Bottine Souriante has travelled throughout the United States, Britain, Scotland, Ireland, Spain, Italy and France. The group was also part of the MIDEM, to take few glasses of wine and to rub shoulders with society. Early this year, the group was honoured at the BBC Folk Awards for the excellence of their stage performance. This award, usually won by Africans, shows that the music of La Bottine Souriante has climbed high on the hit parade of World Beat music. The Centre Pierre-Charbonneau is situated at 3000 Viau, between Ontario and Sherbrooke streets, near the Viau metro. Tickets will be available starting November 9, 2000 through the Admission network and at the Centre Pierre-Charbonneau box office. -30- Source : Les Productions Mille-Pattes PRESS RELEASE
The summer activities spring forth beginning June 23rd with the inauguration of the Franco-Ontarian Festival held in Ottawa. On the morrow, La Bottine will celebrate its 25th year of involvement in the "Fête nationale" with the Bouchervillois. On Friday, July 6th, the group will take a sprint to Drummondville where it will be participating in the Mondial des cultures. Incidentally, in Drummondville La Bottine will be accompanied by four dancers under the direction of Sandy Silva. Following all this hard work La Bottine will take a breather in Europe where the guys will celebrate their 25th with fellow Celtic, Viking, Gauloise, Latin, etc., brethren who, as you well know, all have common cultural roots. The European tour will take our fair-weathered friends to Norway, Switzerland, Denmark, United Kingdom, Scotland, Spain, Italy and, of course, France. The first tour is from the 10th to the 27th of July, and the second tour from the 12th to 27th August. In the meantime, La Bottine will stage a show in Lanaudière, the region where the band saw its birth. There, they'll be performing for the Festival mémoire et racines de Lanaudière. The show will be a family party of sorts since several Bottinian compatriots who used to play with the band are going to share the stage. This will be a unique performance especially put together for the festival held at the enchanting Parc Bosco in St-Charles-Borromé on the 28th of July at 21h30. On Friday, August 3rd, the happy go-getters will paddle upstream to Montreal for a carte blanche a La Bottine--an event organized within the framework of the Francofolies de Montréal. This show brings together, on the same stage, sisters Kate et Ana McGarrigle, Michel Faubert the story teller, Nathalie MacMaster the violinist, and many others. It'll be held at the Métropolis. For your listening and viewing pleasures, the concert will later be aired on Radio-Canada and TV5. The summer of La Bottine's 25th year celebrations will conclude with an event not rumored but eagerly awaited by all: the launching of a brand new album. The originality of the rhythms and arrangements for each of the tunes in this album perfectly confirm that, even after a career of 25 years, eleven albums, and more than two thousand shows under its belt, La Bottine doesn't beat about the bush. Source : Les Productions Mille-Pattes PRESS RELEASE La Bottine Souriante announces its new album, CORDIAL: The 11th album by our legendary Bottine Souriante has finally hit the stores. With the complicity of the sound engineer Claude Champagne, the group succeeds most admirably in recreating all the energy and dynamism the group is known to let loose on stage. Listening to the sixteen tracks has the result of acting like fortifying drink on all who dare lend their ear. It is this immediate effect, moreover, that inspired the title, "Cordial". Cordial is a powerful hotch-potch of daring instrumentals and vocal harmony perfectly in style with the "bottinian" tradition. With this album, LBS reaffirms its role as master of the art of reshaping and reorganizing traditional sounds and rythmns. The result of such mastery is a fresh product in tune with the contemporary world. The eclectic flavor characterizing the LBS label is certainly one of the most important element, which has brought the group renown in world music. Who else but La Bottine Souriante could give an "arabesque" feel to a song like "Dans Paris y' a t'une brune" (The Brunette from Paris); or convert the traditional "Démon sort de l'enfer" (Devil out of Hell) into a real boggie-woogie while in the same breath adapting the lyrics to reflect contemporary social problems? Have we ever savoured such tunes as are deeply rooted in our culture as En p'tit boggie (Giddy Up!) played in reggae style? With this album the nine, energetic musicians making up La Bottine have succeeded in meeting the challenge to efface the prejudice that associated traditional music to holiday celebrations and other similar festive occasions. In effect, Cordial does not contain music to be listened to uniquely on New Years Eve. It contains a cocktail of harmonies for temperate climates: it warms you up in winter and refreshes you during July's heatwave! In addition, for those who dream of doing a little square dancing in their favorite bar or for their next get together, LBS has provided a techno-folkloric instrumental tune entitled, Et boucle La Bottine . The tune was written by Guy Pelletier and Claude Champagne who extracted parts of sound tracks from Cordial and edited them together to form one tune. Inauguration Dates & Places: *Warning: prolonged listening to the album Cordial may stimulate the impression of having ants crawling up your legs. Source: Les Productions Mille-Pattes PRESS RELEASE
La Bottine Souriante Celebrates Its Silver Anniversary with a Compilation Joliette, 19 November, 2001. On October 8th the music publishing house, Les Productions Mille-Pattes, issued a new album signed: La Bottine Souriante. Anthologie is a compilation of 19 titles--of which three were re-recorded and re-arranged--which retraces the long and productive musical journey of our friendly Bottine. This album comes out at a time when the group is celebrating its 25th anniversary. The inveterate fans of LBS will be pleased to once again to hear some of those significant tunes which marked the turning point of La Bottine's career; tunes which allowed the group to break from pure quebec folklore and to broaden its horizons by inviting more youthful musicians within its midst. For the new enthusiasts of the group, they will discover the various ensembles and musical influences which have marked the group's evolution from its beginnings to the present day. This musical Anthologie was issued some weeks after Cordial, La Bottine's latest album. Without a doubt, the year 2001 has been very productive for our ambassadors of quebec's traditional music. The year began with a tour of eastern USA and was followed up with four tours in Europe, from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean. The nine members of La Bottine took advantage of their sojourn in France--during the fall season--where they launched Anthologie and Cordial . Despite its busy touring schedule outside la belle province, La Bottine did not forget its fans in Quebec. The band's numerous shows at festivals and holiday events have left unforgettable memories in the hearts and ears of people here. Ask the people of Boucherville who most certainly won't forget the St-Jean Holiday spent in the band's footstompin' company; or the people of Lanaudiere who savoured La Bottine's 25th Anniversary Concert at the Festival Mémoire et racines; or ask the lucky ones who saw the band at the Metropolis during Montreal's Francofolies. These magical moments will be featured in a documentary produced by Renald Bellemare and broadcast in January, 2002, on Télé-Québec Presently, La Bottine is shining its boots in preparation for a brand new show which the boys will carry to the four corners of Quebec beginning November 23rd to the 22nd of December. From there, the guys will stop off at the Spectrum in Montreal from the 26th to the 29th of December; Les Charbonniers de l'Enfer will open the set. This super show, which is produced by none other than Denis Bouchard, will move to la Salle Albert-Rousseau de Québec on the 30th-31st of December, ending the year's celebrations with a flourish.
